RACES:
Transat 650 2013
BJ CALDWELL
The Transat 650 has been a target since 2002.
The Transat 650 has been a target since 2002.
The 'Transat' is a solo race from France to Brazil every two years for Open 6.5-meter yachts that are floating labratories of innovation.
Break-thrus such as the canting keel and water ballast were first pioneered here before graduating to their larger Open 60 sisters of the nonstop solo around the world race - the Vendee Globe.
Twice finishing 5th of 84 minis in the 2003 and 2004 Mini Fastnet Races was enough to wet my appetite for more attempts to win!
I have Corentin Douguet's 2005 Transat 650 winning prototype - the Manuard designed #433.
The objective is qualification and practice via multiple Mini Fastnet Races leading up to the Transat 650.

THE S&S 34: The Weapon of Choice
Indeed the idea was implemented in 2000 from the desire for the most affordable round the world race via the Southern Ocean and great capes. There is no other choice of yacht with such a comparable safety record in these seas...Introducing the first one-design nonstop around the world race!

The obvious course for the easterly bound 'MOD 34 RACE' (Sydney to Sydney). There are NO rules other than you must use an S&S 34!
Don McIntyre had a similar idea a decade after I announced the idea for a 'One-Design' nonstop around the world race to the S&S 34 Association in 2000 - as illustrated in the informative technical 'face-lift' of Jessica Watson's "Ella's Pink Lady". To view, click pdf file below:

World Distance Record
BJ CALDWELL
The objective is to break my mentor Jon Sanders' triple circumnavigation:
"Dorothy's 'no place like home' ending is all wrong'. After a trip like that you can't go home. Stepping across the line into OZ transformed her into a seeker of the wider world as all good voyages do...the journey creates us - we become the frontiers we cross..."
- Salman Rushdie
"Anyone thats been friends with me since 1996 knows my primary objective is to ‘improve’ Jon Sanders’ triple nonstop circumnavigation ‘World Distance Record’.
After sailing countless thousand miles and races with Jon Sanders – my ‘signature voyage’, when I sail 4 X nonstop solo around the world isn’t nearly as far as the 100,000-nautical miles during the record voyage to come!
...Imagine summiting Mt. Everest twice back to back without supplemental oxygen or a 'pit-stop'. The voyage described is the 'horizontal equivalent at sea. Every OTHER sporting discipline that circles a race turning mark does it more than once..."
-Bj Caldwell
The Record: 4 X Nonstop Solo Around the World = 100,000-nautical miles
"There are no answers, only choices."
"For the first time, it's really the voyage - not the destination that counts. We will explore the outermost limits of human understanding offshore. We will push today's design, construction, computer, mechanical and human interface to the limit on all ocean's of the world. On the way, we will learn about ourselves, illustrate how far we've come and how much further we can go. We will find out how far, how fast and for how long, our consolidated knowledge can take us.
In doing so, we will honor our great heritage of exploration. This multiple circuit of the planet is a living monument to everyone that has crossed oceans. From the ages and cultures, we have not discriminated in our quest to face the ocean united. We know this same teamwork and utilization of global resources and talent will lead toward the next great age of exploration - space.
The yacht is a microcosm of our celestial boat - the world. 'ISIS 2' is bristling with technology, human ingenuity and resilience.
She is ready to meet fate, however far away..."
"No fate but what we make."
